He was born in Moscow into a family of teachers. Nikolai Bukharin. Revolutionary, associate of Lenin, Marxist theorist. Critic of collectivization.
We can only have two parties: one in the Kremlin, the other in prison.
He joined the RSDLP as a student in 1906. After four arrests, he fled abroad, straight from exile. He was arrested there three times during World War I, in different countries. He met Lenin и Trotsky.
In 1917, he returned to Russia, edited the newspaper Pravda, and effectively served as the party's chief ideologist. He was fluent in French, English, and German. He was erudite and easy to talk to, and was nicknamed "Kolya the Chatterbox."
He supported terrorism as a method of class struggle. In 1919, he himself became a victim of a terrorist attack and was wounded in a bomb explosion.
After Lenin's death he became close with Stalin, whom he addressed informally. He helped Stalin in the fight against his political opponents: Trotsky, Kamenev, Zinoviev. He drew unique caricatures—the only portraits of the leader from life, not from a photograph.
You and I, Bukharchik, are the Himalayas, and everyone else is just little spots
(Stalin)
In 1928, he spoke out against accelerated collectivization. He called for the kulaks to be treated equally with other villagers rather than exterminated. He called all other approaches (including Stalin's) "adventuristic," and the leader himself a "petty Eastern despot."
In 1929 he was removed from the Politburo of the Central Committee. He edited Izvestia. He was friends with Gorky, Mandelstam и Pasternak, but together with the party he criticized Yesenin. He was one of the authors of the 1936 USSR Constitution.
In 1937 he became one of the main defendants in the trial of the "Anti-Soviet Right-Trotskyist Bloc".
The so-called NKVD organs are a degenerate organization of unprincipled, corrupt, well-off officials who, to please Stalin's morbid suspicion, in pursuit of medals and glory, commit their vile deeds, incidentally, not realizing that they are simultaneously destroying themselves - history does not tolerate witnesses to dirty deeds!
Shot in 1938.
I plead guilty to treason against the socialist homeland, to organizing kulak uprisings, and to preparing terrorist acts. The enormity of my crimes is immeasurable.
(from the last word)
In a letter to Stalin, he denied all charges brought against him and asked for the opportunity to commit suicide. He was rehabilitated 50 years later.
