Born in 1840, in Vyatka Governorate (now - Udmurtia). My father was the head of a steel plant.

At 12 he entered to study at Petersburg to become a lawyer. At 19, after graduating from college, he worked at the Ministry of Justice, handling peasant cases. At 21, he realized that art was his calling. He entered the conservatory.

He wrote 10 operas, 3 ballets, 7 symphonies, 104 romances and cantatas. Almost all of them were successfully performed on Russian stages.

In 1875, his opera The Oprichnik was banned: critics believed that it denounced the Tsar and prophesied revolution.
In his mature years, he lived in seclusion on his estate near Moscow. It was there that he wrote his most famous operas: "The Queen of Spades," "The Enchantress," and the ballets "Swan Lake," "The Sleeping Beauty," and "The Nutcracker."
