A Voice from the Window of NotMoscow: When the Spirit of Karelia Turns into Music

🎧 ILMU — a folk-trip-hop group from Petrozavodsk, performing original songs in the Livvik dialect of the Karelian language, which is in danger of disappearing.

ILMU — The best Russian ethnomusic project according to the jury of the Russian World Music Awards-2021, a participant in the joint project of the Arzamas Academy and Yandex.Travel "Tours in Cultures," as well as festivals in Finland, Estonia, Moscow, Murmansk, and Yoshkar-Ola.

The word "ilmu" means "air" or "weather" in Karelian. This name is reflected in the band's work: the musicians draw inspiration from the nature of Karelia, the majestic and mystically captivating beauty of this northern region.

Local influences are also used in music creation. For example, traditional Karelian instruments—the kantele, jouhikko, and mänkere—are also used. The fiddle, saw, and Galician bagpipes are also used.
