94 thousand km of sewer pipes in Russia are in a worn-out condition

There are enough rotten sewer pipes in Russia to circle the Earth twice around the equator. And there'd still be enough left over for a pipeline from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok.

The sewer networks in greatest need of replacement are: Jewish autonomous region (80%), Tuva (79%) and Kurgan region (73%).

According to Rosstat, the average deterioration rate of sewer networks across the country is 46%.

As a professor at the Graduate School of Urban Studies explained to journalists Sergey SivaevWith an average sewer system lifespan of about 50 years, at least 2% of its length needs to be updated. To reduce accidents, the figure is about 3%.

“Right now, only a little more than 1% is being replaced,” - noted Sivaev. 

He also noted that the growth of utility tariffs has not kept pace with inflation, which is why utility companies are operating without revenue and are unable to find funds for large-scale network reconstruction.

By the way, over the past year and a half, housing and communal services in Russia have increased in price by 20%.
