Scientists found a 700-kilogram bear in Stavropol.
Russian paleontologists have discovered a new species of extinct giant bear. It lived 5-6 million years ago and weighed over 700 kg. сообщает RIA Novosti. The remains were found in the Kosyakinsky quarry in the Stavropol region. Giant pandas are considered the closest relatives of these bears.

“I named it Borisyak’s Hurakan in honor of the first director of our institute, Academician Alexei Alekseevich Borisyak (1872–1944), who, among other things, studied fossil bears,” — Alexey Lopatin, director of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the publication.
The Huracan is a new species of giant bear named after the powerful god of wind, storm, and tempest in Mayan mythology.
According to the scientist, ancient bears have been relatively little studied, so new species will continue to be discovered.
