A monument to Solzhenitsyn will be moved from the city center to the outskirts following a demand from a deputy who called the writer a Judas.

City Hall Vladivostok I found a contractor who will move the writer's monument for 201 thousand rubles. Alexander Solzhenitsyn from Korabelnaya Embankment in the city center to the Square of Faith and Hope, where a monument to the repressed stands, сообщают "Amur Affairs." According to local media, this is an unremarkable and unpopular place among tourists.

The sculpture has been controversial from the very beginning, having been desecrated on numerous occasions, and in 2015 a local activist Maksim Shinkarenko He hung a plaque on it reading "Judas." Shinkarenko later became a member of parliament and continued to fight the monument to the famous dissident: he declared it should be removed and expressed outrage that the city had no room for a monument to Stalin for the 70th anniversary of Victory Day, while a place had been found for Solzhenitsyn.

Shinkarenko wasn't the only opponent of the monument. In 2023, a resident of the Amur region Andy Hooke through the court demanded The monument should be removed because Solzhenitsyn is a controversial figure, and his monument should not be located next to monuments to the heroic deeds of Primorye residents in the Great Patriotic War. The court then dismissed Guk's claim.

The topic of the Gulag and Stalin's repressions in modern Russia is increasingly being quietly reexamined. In Magadan, instead of a large-scale "Museum of Memory," which was supposed to tell the story of the Gulag and political repressions, decided to build a local history and patriotic complex. And the Gulag History Museum in Moscow changes the name of the Museum of Memory and will no longer focus on the theme of repression.
