The first legal decision in six years: the seizure of Sergei Furgal's family home in Khabarovsk has been overturned.

The Zheleznodorozhny District Court of Khabarovsk has ruled to leave the family of convicted former governor Sergei Furgal their only residential home. Previously, the property, built by the politician back in 2003, was slated for confiscation by the state.

"The First Legal Decision": The Reaction of the Ex-Governor from the Penal Colony

The change in the regulatory authorities' position was announced directly by the imprisoned former regional governor himself. Sergei Furgal commented on the court ruling in an official letter sent to his release from prison.

"The bailiffs didn't file an appeal. And this is the first legal court decision against me in six years."

Therefore, the agency's previous decisions were successfully challenged by the defense. As a reminder, in the spring, immediately after Furgal's total prison sentence was increased to 25 years, a major scandal erupted around his family home. The former governor openly spoke of unprecedented pressure from security forces. According to him, authorities openly threatened to completely confiscate his home, forcibly evict his ex-wife, and even euthanize his pets. Ultimately, the bailiffs' intentions sparked a powerful public outcry in the Far East.

Context: Criminal cases against Sergei Furgal and protests in Khabarovsk

Sergei Furgal has been in custody since July 2020. He was convicted in his first high-profile criminal case in February 2023, receiving a 22-year sentence in a maximum-security penal colony. The jury found him guilty of orchestrating the murders of entrepreneurs Yevgeny Zorya in 2004 and Oleg Bulatov in 2005, as well as the attempted murder of businessman Alexander Smolsky.

Consequently, the prosecution of the former official did not end there. Law enforcement opened a second criminal case in 2023. This time, the politician was accused of organizing a criminal organization and large-scale fraud related to the theft of assets from MSP Bank and funds from the Amurstal metallurgical company. This trial lingered through the courts for nearly two years, ultimately increasing his final prison term to a quarter of a century.

However, it's worth noting that the former governor remains a significant figure in the region. Immediately following his brutal arrest, thousands of people protested daily in Khabarovsk for several months, demanding the popular politician's immediate release. Ultimately, in an effort to completely quell public discontent, Russian authorities officially designated the "I/WE Sergey Furgal" public movement as an extremist organization and banned its activities.
