A battery recycling plant is planned for construction in Ryazan near residential buildings and a lake.
The plant was planned build within the city limits village of Voroshilovka. About it сообщили in the "Ryazan Environmental Alliance" group. Official media confirmed the authorities' intentions.
"The plant will accept up to 15,000 tons of batteries per year. First, the batteries will be crushed, and then the lead will be sent for smelting. The metal will be smelted in furnaces powered by fuel oil or heating oil."- пишет edition RZN.info.
The facility is officially classified as hazard class 2. According to established standards, the sanitary protection zone is typically 500 meters.
Activists from the public organization "Breathe Clean" believe the plant has a higher hazard classification. The plant will process lead and store chemical reagents such as caustic soda, saltpeter, sulfur, phosphorus, arsenic, and selenium. The sanitary protection zone should extend to 1000 meters.
Furthermore, according to the public organization Ecodefense, the 2016 law of the Ryazan region prohibits the placement of enterprises of hazard classes 1 and 2 within the boundaries of populated areas.
The plant will also be located 500 meters from a reservoir named Wild duck, where, according to ornithologists, up to 70 species of birds nest.
Representatives of the public were not present at the public discussions regarding the plant's construction: the public hearings were announced only a couple of hours before they began.
In 2019, Ryazan residents defended the lake from destruction: a private owner tried to fill it in.
