He was born in Moscow, into a lawyer's family. Lev Ginzburg. Translator and publicist.
And so that the world is young, love and hunger reign!
(Schiller translated by Ginzburg)
He wrote poetry since childhood and attended a literary workshop. During the war, he served in the Far East.
He graduated from the Philology Department of Moscow State University at almost 30. He spent his entire life translating from German. His famous works include a collection of old German songs, "The Boy's Magic Horn," and the medieval "Lyrics of the Vagantes."
Our union of vagants will now be established
For people of all tribes, ranks and talents.
Every good person, it is said in the Charter,
A German, a Turk or a Greek has the right to become a vagant.
Whether you recognize Christ is not important to us,
If only the soul were pure, the heart not corruptible
Do not be angry, Lord! It is just,
so that beer can strengthen weak flesh
One of his free translations of the poetry of the Vagantes formed the basis of the popular song “On the French Side” set to music David Tukhmanov.
On the French side, on a foreign planet,
I have to study at university.
With his translations, he tried to overcome the prejudice of Soviet people towards German poetry after the war. He translated works Schiller и Heine, youthful poems Karl Marx.
These poems saved me from hatred. A nation that has songs like these can't be bad.
(A review from a Soviet woman who lost her family and was caught up in the occupation)
My dad froze to death near Leningrad,
I lay in the snow, shaking with terror.
But I'm different, I don't need much,
I'm not one of those who craves rebellion.
(Volker von Terne, translated by Ginzburg)
In his mature years, he traveled around the country and collected material for his anti-fascist books with stories about the atrocities of the SS units - "The Price of Ashes" and "The Abyss".
This is our pain, our business, the duty imposed on our generation: to pay the ultimate price for all those killed, tortured, and ruined - from the glorified martyrs to the unknown child who has not yet received a name, torn from his mother's breast and thrown into a burial ditch.
He died at 58, in 1980.
