"The idea of a tiger living by the ocean": A German photographer shared unique footage of an Amur tiger in Primorye.
On International Tiger Day, German wildlife photographer Sascha Fonseca shared a rare shot of an Amur tiger on the ocean shore. To capture the image, the photographer used automated camera traps in Primorsky Krai, working in extremely challenging climatic conditions.
A project in the Lazovsky Nature Reserve and the search for rare footage
In 2024, German wildlife photographer Sascha Fonseca began a large-scale project dedicated to the Amur tiger in Primorsky Krai. Specifically, he traveled to the Lazovsky Nature Reserve and the Call of the Tiger National Park to shoot.
In his work, Fonseca uses professional automatic photography systems. Consequently, due to the nature of his method, the author must wait months for a successful shot.
"The Result of a Multi-Year Project": A Portrait of a Tiger by the Ocean
However, one of his most impressive recent works was a portrait of a tiger right on the seashore. The photographer himself admitted that he had long dreamed of capturing such a shot:
For as long as I can remember, I've always been fascinated by the idea of a tiger living by the ocean. […] This photograph is the result of a multi-year project using camera traps in one of the most challenging environments I've ever worked in. Salt spray, fog, storms, and extreme weather conditions constantly test both equipment and patience. And yet, it's precisely this unique coastal habitat that makes these tigers so special.
